Powering Echo is Alexa, the company’s AI voice-assistant like Apple’s Siri or Google Assistant. You can ask her questions and queries, search for digital content, shop and make purchases and much more. But at its core, Echo was designed to be a home device.
Through an API, Amazon has made it possible for developers and manufacturers to include Alexa support in other devices, like a phone mount for your car. But what if you want to take Alexa everywhere you go? What if you want her to be more, well, portable?
The VAUX Cordless Home Speaker and Portable Battery for Amazon Echo Dot (Generation 2), makes it possible to take Alexa everywhere, assuming you already own an Echo Dot. Even though “home” is in the name, you’re not confined to your personal property. It’s a cordless speaker and portable battery system you can take anywhere and everywhere.
The Echo Dot sits right inside a compartment at the top, and a battery bank will provide up to 6 hours of use. As you’d expect, that battery is rechargeable.
The integrated speaker includes dual 52mm drivers and a passive radiator for added sound and bass boosting. If you know absolutely nothing about audio and portable speakers, rest assured, those are decent specs for a portable speaker. This thing will sound good, no matter what it’s playing.
The stock cable that comes with your Amazon Echo Dot can be used to both power the speaker and charge up the battery. You don’t need to worry about any proprietary chargers or power adapters. That’s ideal when you’re traveling because you can bring the one power adapter and it will work for both the portable speaker and Dot.
The speaker also has a 3.5mm AUX input so you can connect external media players to it for music playback. That makes perfect sense since this thing is portable. You won’t always have internet access to stream music and media to Dot. Plugging in an external player will remedy that.
The VAUX cordless speaker and portable battery bank is a solid investment, if you already own an Echo Dot. There’s just one gripe we have with it. The speaker is black and comes in the one color. If you own a white Dot, it doesn’t match and stands out like a sore thumb when it’s docked. This is a minor issue, however, and the speaker still operates fine no matter what color Dot you own.
